New Berlin Mayor Dave Ament faces calls for resignation over social media posts

New Berlin Mayor Dave Ament is facing intense scrutiny and calls for his resignation following his decision to share anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic content on social media. The posts included a message claiming that voting for a Muslim in elected office constitutes being a “traitor.”

During a New Berlin Common Council meeting on August 25, numerous residents spoke publicly to condemn the posts and demand Ament's removal. The Council prepared a resolution to formally condemn the mayor's actions, calling for him to acknowledge the harm caused and offer a sincere apology. The resolution also indicated that the council may consider formal processes to remove him from office.

Ament issued an apology during the meeting, stating, “I take full responsibility for sharing them. I unfortunately, did not take into account how these inappropriate posts could be insulting, offensive, and hurtful.” He subsequently left the meeting, drawing further criticism from residents who questioned his absence during the public comment period. The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Chicago has also joined the calls for his resignation.
