New bi-mode trains arrive for NSW regional rail fleet

Sixteen of the 29 new regional trains intended to replace the New South Wales regional rail fleet have arrived in Australia. The fleet includes nine long regional trains and seven short regional trains.

The new vehicles utilize bi-mode technology, an Australian first for regional passengers, allowing them to operate on electric power on electrified networks and switch to diesel when necessary. Passenger amenities include reclining and swiveling seats, fold-down tray tables, and power outlets at every seat. The fleet also features increased accessibility with more spaces for wheelchairs.

While the first two long regional trains have completed passenger service kilometre testing, a specific commencement date for public service has not been confirmed. Minister for Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison stated that a timeline will be established following the accreditation process by the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator. Testing will continue to include thousands of kilometres of trials across metropolitan and regional lines to verify brakes, communication systems, and safety features.
