New Biogas Plant Proposed in Campondón, Spain

A second biogas plant is being proposed on municipal land in Mantinos, opposite the existing Guardo facility within the Campondón industrial zone. The project, designed by Proyecto Pitma Generación 02, has submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment. It aims to treat 123,000 tonnes of organic waste per year – including 65,000 t of pig manure, 40,000 t of cattle manure and 18,000 t of wheat straw – at a daily capacity of 447 tonnes. The plant is expected to produce 929 Nm³ of biogas per day (about 55 % methane), delivering roughly 50,345 MWh of biomethane annually into the La Robla‑Guardo gas pipeline. The assessment notes synergies with the nearby plant, shared infrastructure and minimized duplicate impacts, while ensuring the site avoids a public‑utility mountain zone.

These developments are part of a broader push in Spain to turn biowaste into renewable energy and biofertilizers. Composting, anaerobic digestion and mechanical‑biological treatments convert organic residues into compost, biogas and digestate, supporting the EU’s circular‑economy goals and reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers.
