New book explores risks of religious hegemony on democracy
New book ‘O perigo de uma religião única’ (The Danger of a Single Religion), authored by Bàbá Sidnei Nogueira and Hédio Silva Jr., explores the intersection of religion, power, and democracy. Published by Editora Planeta, the work was presented at the São Paulo City Council.
Inspired by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s concept of ‘the danger of a single story,’ the authors examine the consequences of a single religious worldview attempting to occupy pluralistic spaces. The book analyzes how religious discourses can be used to legitimize exclusion and violence, impacting issues such as racism, misogyny, LGBTphobia, and education.
The authors argue that religious freedom must encompass the coexistence of diverse traditions and perspectives, rather than allowing one belief system to define the limits of existence for others. The discussion connects these themes to the principles of a secular state and the preservation of democratic values.
