New Box Jellyfish Species Identified off Singapore

Researchers from the National University of Singapore and Japan's Tohoku University have formally described a previously unknown box jellyfish, Chironex blakangmati, from waters near Sentosa Island. The specimens, collected between 2020 and 2021, were distinguished from the related Chironex yamaguchii through detailed anatomical and genetic analysis, and the findings were published on 15 May 2026 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology. Box jellyfish are among the most lethal marine animals, capable of delivering a venom that can cause severe pain, cardiovascular collapse, and death within minutes, making them a greater public‑health threat than sharks in many regions.

The discovery underscores the need for greater monitoring of coastal marine life, especially in heavily used recreational areas, and highlights the broader risk posed by box jellyfish, which are frequently cited as the deadliest oceanic creatures in scientific and popular accounts of marine hazards.
