New Brunswick faces debate over surge in data centre applications

New Brunswick is facing growing tension over the rapid expansion of data centre proposals, which have sparked concerns regarding energy consumption and environmental protection. Documents released through right-to-information legislation by Opportunities New Brunswick revealed additional proposals for energy-intensive facilities in the province.

NB Power, the province’s Crown-owned electric utility, has confirmed receiving 10 applications for data centre projects that could require up to 900 megawatts of power. The utility has declined to identify the specific projects, citing confidentiality.

While the provincial government views these facilities as opportunities for economic growth, tax revenue, and job creation, local citizens have expressed disappointment over a perceived lack of transparency. Critics argue that the government is reviewing these projects without adequate rules or guidelines to protect citizens and the environment from the impact of hyperscale campuses, which can consume power levels comparable to a small city.
