New Brunswick issues equine health advisory over virus exposure

New Brunswick health officials have issued an equine health advisory following potential exposure to Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1) at a horse show in Sussex. The advisory targets exhibitors and trainers who attended the 4-H Round Up Show at the King’s County Fair Draft Horse Show earlier this month.

Chief Veterinary Officer Nicole Wanamaker stated that while the horse that tested positive for EHV-1 was not present at the show, a horse participating in the event had been at the same boarding facility as the infected animal. EHV-1 is highly contagious and can lead to respiratory disease, neurological issues, and pregnancy loss in horses. Owners are urged to isolate horses from the show for 14 to 21 days and monitor for fever, lethargy, or reduced appetite.

Veterinarians have noted that the incident highlights concerns regarding large-animal veterinary access in the province. Jordan Koivu, owner of Maritime Equine Veterinary Services, expressed concern that the New Brunswick government’s plan to privatize field veterinary services for large animals by March 2027 could lead to delayed diagnoses and treatment. This follows a government decision to stop using public funds to subsidize non-commercial livestock and equine facilities.
