New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt has stated that the province will continue to supply electricity to Maine despite the escalating trade war between Canada and the United States. Holt described cutting off power to neighboring communities as an extremely serious measure. This stance contrasts with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who suggested his province might entirely halt power exports to the U.S.

Following the imposition of 50 per cent duties by the U.S. administration on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, Holt noted that New Brunswick faces approximately $112 million in affected exports, representing roughly 0.8 per cent of its total exports to the U.S. The province estimates that about 500 jobs could be at risk.

Holt is collaborating with Prime Minister Mark Carney on retaliatory measures, supporting a strategy to impact the U.S. significantly while minimizing domestic damage. The New Brunswick government is also considering increasing a $13.7-million joint provincial-federal tariff relief fund in the upcoming budget to mitigate the economic impact.
