New clinical tool and review evaluate bipolar disorder treatments
A major review of bipolar disorder treatments has been published in The BMJ, introducing a web-based tool designed to assist doctors and patients in selecting optimal therapeutic approaches. The review synthesizes findings from 77 meta-analyses, grading various treatments based on scientific certainty and efficacy regarding symptom management and remission across different phases of the disorder.
Researchers noted that nearly half of individuals with bipolar disorder fail to adhere to prescribed treatments, citing reasons such as perceived inefficacy, poor tolerability, or a lack of involvement in the decision-making process. The new platform aims to address these challenges by allowing clinicians and patients to collaborate on finding a balance between treatment effectiveness and side effects tailored to individual needs.
