New clinical trial results emerge for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis treatments
Recent clinical developments have emerged regarding treatments for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Agomab Therapeutics reported that its inhaled drug, AGMB-447, successfully inhibited its intended target in a phase 1 trial. The drug is designed to block ALK5 to prevent the buildup of scar tissue in the lungs while minimizing systemic exposure through direct inhalation. The company intends to proceed to phase 2 trials by the end of the year.
In a separate development presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress, results from a phase 2a/2b trial of BI 1839100, a TRPA1 antagonist, showed potential for managing IPF-related chronic cough. Although the drug missed its primary endpoint for cough reduction at week 4, it demonstrated a 45.5% reduction in 24-hour cough count relative to placebo by week 12. Researchers noted that the drug's safety profile was acceptable and suggested the delayed effect might indicate the drug requires a longer assessment period to show efficacy.
