New CT Scanner Construction Begins at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, BC

Construction work started on July 27, 2026 to renovate the CT scanner room at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, British Columbia. A temporary mobile CT unit was placed in front of the hospital to keep imaging services uninterrupted, and the unit arrived on June 27, 2026. The health ministry expects patient appointments to be scheduled in the mobile unit beginning in August, with the unit being wheelchair‑ and stretcher‑accessible.

The upgraded facility will house a new CT scanner that should raise imaging capacity by more than 25 % and enable roughly 9,000 scans per year. Interior Health CEO Sylvia Weir said the scanner offers advanced imaging capabilities and shorter exam times, helping reduce wait times and limiting the need to transfer patients. Minister of Health Josie Osborne and MLA Brittny Anderson highlighted the project’s importance for providing high‑quality care close to home. Additional upgrades include new flooring, ceiling, millwork and doors, as well as added accessible parking and a relocated BC Transit stop.
