Greek Orthodox Church marks Serres liberation and saints Peter & Paul on June 29 2026

On 29 June 2026 the Orthodox Church held several ceremonies. In Serres, Greece, the 113th anniversary of the city’s liberation from Ottoman rule was commemorated with a special liturgy at the Cathedral of Saint Theodoros, speeches by the mayor and local officials, and a performance by the youth choir “Angel Voices”. The same day the Church also celebrated the feast of the Primordial Apostles Peter and Paul with a poly‑archiaterical service in the old Metropolitan cathedral of Veria and a deacon’s ordination in Sydney, Australia, led by Archbishop Makarios of the Australian Orthodox Diocese.

The following day, 30 June, the Orthodox calendar listed the Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles and the memories of saints Meliton and Gerbasius, while traditional name‑day greetings were published for a wide range of Greek names. On 1 July the calendar marked the commemorations of Saints Cosmas, Damian, and Mauricius, again providing name‑day information and historical notes.

These events illustrate the church’s role in both regional historic remembrance and the regular liturgical honoring of saints throughout the Greek Orthodox calendar.
