Gyanesh Kumar resignation protests erupt across India

Nationwide protests have erupted across India, including major demonstrations in Delhi and Mumbai, targeting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. Protesters, led by the Gen Z-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and various student organizations such as AISA, SFI, and NSUI, are demanding Kumar’s resignation. The movement centers on allegations of irregularities and mass voter deletions during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

In New Delhi, police implemented Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to prohibit unauthorized assemblies. Authorities detained hundreds of protesters, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Saurabh Bharadwaj and Sanjeev Jha, as well as several prominent figures from the CPI(M). Security measures included the closure of 11 to 12 Delhi Metro stations, such as Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat, and the suspension of internet services in central Delhi.

In Mumbai, demonstrations took place at Shivaji Park, drawing support from public figures like Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, and Vishal Dadlani. While the CJP has called for nationwide action, including in Goa, Kolkata, and Bengaluru, local residents in Mumbai expressed concerns regarding noise and disruption. The Election Commission has maintained that its voter-list revision process is intended to remove duplicate or ineligible entries.
