India protests erupt over alleged disenfranchisement of 130 million voters

Massive protests have erupted in New Delhi as thousands of demonstrators demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The unrest is driven by allegations that a recent voter list revision, known as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), has disenfranchised over 130 million citizens—approximately 13% of the Indian electorate—across 30 states.

Critics and opposition groups argue the purge is politically motivated to benefit the ruling BJP and disproportionately targets minority communities, particularly Muslims. In response, the Election Commission and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration have denied these claims, asserting the process is necessary to remove duplicate or ineligible entries.

The protests are being spearheaded by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-led satirical movement that emerged after a judge compared unemployed youth to cockroaches. Authorities have responded with significant security measures, including the detention of CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and other activists, the closure of Central Park, and heavy police presence in Connaught Place. The India Alliance, a coalition of over 20 political parties, has also taken the matter to the Supreme Court, seeking a formal review of the voter roll deletions.
