New Delhi tests experimental smog towers to combat air pollution
New Delhi is addressing its chronic air pollution crisis through the use of experimental technology known as smog towers. These structures utilize large fans to draw in contaminated air, pass it through filtration systems, and release air with lower concentrations of pollutants back into the environment.
The city and its metropolitan region face recurring episodes of severe pollution, particularly during autumn and winter. Contributing factors include vehicle emissions, industrial activities, road dust, construction, and regional agricultural emissions. A primary concern is PM2.5, fine particulate matter capable of penetrating deep into the human respiratory system.
While the concept of using large-scale filters at specific points is straightforward, the effectiveness of smog towers in significantly cleaning a city's air remains a complex and debated issue.
