New dinosaur species Kayrasaurus changliensis discovered in China
Researchers in Liaoning, China, have discovered a new dinosaur species named Kayrasaurus changliensis. The nearly complete skeleton, dating back approximately 125 million years to the Early Cretaceous period, was found in the Yixian Formation.
Belonging to the therizinosaur group, the dinosaur is characterized by large, curved claws on its hands and unusually small, closely spaced teeth. While the specimen was a juvenile—estimated to be 3.6 meters long and weighing between 117 and 274 kilograms—scientists believe adults were significantly larger.
The species' anatomy suggests a robust build suited for steady movement rather than high speeds. The dense arrangement of teeth may indicate a strong biting force. The name Kayrasaurus incorporates elements of Chinese history and Turkish mythology.
