New electrolyte additive bis-DTD extends LiFePO4 battery life for EVs and grid storage
Researchers evaluated almost 25 novel electrolyte additives and many combinations in lithium‑ion pouch cells with layered‑oxide (NMC) and LiFePO₄ (LFP) cathodes. While 4 % vinylene carbonate (VC) improved high‑temperature performance of LFP/graphite cells, it caused high impedance at room temperature. A newly synthesized additive, bis(1,3,2‑dioxathiolane‑2,2‑dioxide) (bis‑DTD), used as a co‑additive with 2 % VC, delivered about 1 500 cycles at 70 °C and stable cycling at ambient temperature. The same formulation extended the life of NMC cells, retaining over 80 % capacity after more than 2 500 cycles at 40 °C and over 5 000 cycles at 20 °C, and also improved sodium‑ion cells.
LiFePO₄ batteries are recognized for high safety, thermal stability and long cycle life, making them common in electric vehicles, solar‑energy storage and other power‑delivery applications. The demonstrated additive benefits could further increase the reliability and lifespan of these batteries, supporting their expanding role in clean‑energy and mobility systems.
