New England Aquarium releases five rehabilitated Kemp’s ridley turtles off Cape Cod

Five endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles rescued during Cape Cod’s cold‑stunning season were treated for pneumonia, dehydration and trauma at the New England Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Hospital in Quincy for seven months.

The turtles were released back into Massachusetts waters off Cape Cod after the rehabilitation period. Each was given a font‑themed name—Times New Roman, Papyrus, Gigi, Walter Turncoat and Punk Kid—and was tagged by aquarium scientists to track its post‑release movements. Dr. Melissa Joblon, Director of Animal Health at the aquarium, said the turtles are now strong enough to survive on their own. The releases support conservation goals that benefit coastal ecosystems and the local communities that depend on them.
