New England governors oppose NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy merger

New England governors, led by Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, are raising concerns regarding NextEra Energy’s proposed acquisition of Dominion Energy. Through the New England States Committee on Electricity (NESCOE), regional leaders are calling for a rigorous federal review of the merger, citing potential risks to electricity costs, competition, and grid reliability.

If approved, the combined entity would control the region’s two remaining nuclear power plants, which provide approximately one-quarter of New England’s electricity. Critics, including Governor Healey, have pointed to the companies' past actions in the region, including efforts to block transmission lines and previous disputes regarding ratepayer refunds and power station operations.

In a separate effort to address energy stability and affordability, Governor Healey is hosting a regional summit on September 30 at UMass Lowell. The summit aims to explore how advanced nuclear and fusion technologies might expand energy supply and lower electric bills for households and businesses across the region.
