New England heating oil prices surge amid global instability

Heating oil prices in New England are experiencing significant increases, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine. In Maine, statewide average prices have reached approximately $5.96 per gallon, an increase of about 80% compared to the previous year. This surge is expected to cost homeowners an additional $725 to fill a standard 275-gallon tank, raising concerns for low-income families.

In New Hampshire, average household heating oil costs are projected to rise by 31 percent, potentially costing families nearly $2,300 this winter. These price hikes are linked to maritime disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, as well as military escalations involving Iran.

Simultaneously, New Hampshire is facing economic pressure from rising consumer debt. Data from the state’s Department of Employment Security indicates that nearly 12 percent of borrowers are severely delinquent, with credit card delinquency rates reaching levels similar to those seen during the Great Recession.
