New England features various historic landmarks and federally preserved sites, ranging from major national parks to lesser-known monuments.

In Moultonborough, New Hampshire, the Castle in the Clouds serves as a prominent historic attraction. Originally known as the Lucknow estate, the 6,300-acre property was established in the early 1900s by shoe-industry millionaire Tom Plant. The Arts and Crafts style mansion, built between 1913 and 1914, was designed by J. Williams Beal & Sons and featured advanced technologies for the era, such as a central vacuum and refrigeration system. The estate was renamed Castle in the Clouds in 1959.

Beyond major destinations like Acadia and Cape Cod National Seashore, the region contains several underrated sites managed by the National Park Service. These include locations such as the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site in Brookline, Massachusetts, which averages fewer than 10,000 annual visitors.
