New England Patriots address Gillette Stadium turf non-compliance
The New England Patriots are working to install a new artificial turf surface at Gillette Stadium ahead of their preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. The replacement follows a determination by the NFL and the NFL Players Association that the previous turf, installed after hosting World Cup matches, was non-compliant because it lacked the required rubber shock pad, or E-layer.
Chief operating officer Jim Nolan stated that the new surface will be the latest version of the field used in January and should be consistent with what players experienced last year. While the team faces a tight timeline to complete the installation and pass independent laboratory testing, officials do not expect it to disrupt the preseason schedule or player performance.
In training camp news, the Patriots recently returned to the practice field following a weekend break. Notable roster movements included signing Hunter Henry to a two-year extension and releasing Caedan Wallace. On the field, cornerback Carlton Davis returned to practice in a limited capacity, and offensive tackle Will Campbell participated in team drills after previously missing sessions.
