Indianapolis Colts coordinator Brian Mason suffers severe knee injury

Indianapolis Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason suffered a severe knee injury during the final play of the preseason opener against the New England Patriots. Mason reportedly tore multiple ligaments after being “rolled up” by players from both teams on the sideline during a Hail Mary attempt.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed Mason was being evaluated following the collision. While it is currently unknown if surgery will be required, the injury may impact the team's special teams coaching structure. Joe Hastings, the senior assistant special teams coach, is available to assist.

The preseason game ended in a 13-13 tie. In the matchup, Patriots backup quarterback Tommy DeVito performed well in the first half, completing 13 of 22 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. Rookie quarterback Behren Morton also saw action late in the game, completing 7 of 13 passes for 66 yards.
