New England Patriots assess backup QB race as starter Drake Maye returns from shoulder injury
Quarterback Drake Maye, the New England Patriots’ starter, suffered a shoulder injury during the AFC championship game and played through it in the Super Bowl, which the Patriots lost 13‑29 to the Seattle Seahawks. Maye said his shoulder “feels great” and confirmed he is ready for the 2026 season after extra rest and recovery.
In training camp, the Patriots are evaluating their backup quarterbacks. Second‑string Tommy DeVito, 28, has received the bulk of reps, completing 7‑for‑8 in short‑yardage drills and 18‑for‑29 in longer plays, while building chemistry with receivers Kyle Williams and Eli Raridon. Rookie Behren Morton, a seventh‑round pick, is also showing progress, completing 5‑for‑7 in short drills and 7‑for‑11 in longer ones, and working closely with undrafted receiver Cameron Dorner. Both players have been praised by head coach Mike Vrabel, who noted Morton's quick learning and DeVito’s confidence as they compete for the backup role.
