New England Patriots rookies struggle in preseason debut

New England Patriots rookies Caleb Lomu and Gabe Jacas faced challenges during their preseason debut in a 13-13 tie against the Indianapolis Colts.

Lomu, an offensive tackle, showed technical errors such as missing cut blocks and struggling with assignment sorting, though he demonstrated improvement later in the game. Jacas, an edge rusher, appeared raw, struggling with instincts and read option fakes, despite showing physical strength and occasional pressure that contributed to an interception.

Head coach Mike Vrabel noted that there is “a lot of room for improvement” for the young players. He emphasized that the speed of game action is significantly faster than practice. Additionally, the Patriots are addressing offensive line depth following an injury to interior lineman Ben Brown, with plans to sign two new interior linemen to the roster.
