New England rooftop solar cuts July heat‑wave electricity costs by $130 million

During the early July heat wave (June 28 – July 4) rooftop solar panels across New England supplied roughly 25% of the region’s total electric demand at peak times. The distributed generation reduced the amount of power the regional grid had to procure, shaving an estimated $130 million from wholesale electricity costs for customers, according to analysis by the Acadia Center.

Jamie Dickerson of the Acadia Center said, "It's distributed solar, it is close to where the load is… it effectively reduces the peak demand that is seen on the regional grid." The on‑site solar output, about 3,594 MW during the hottest hours, exceeded the combined generation of the region’s largest nuclear plants, helping to keep the grid reliable and lowering reliance on expensive peak‑generation resources.

The savings illustrate how widespread behind‑the‑meter solar can alleviate grid stress and lower energy bills for both solar owners and other ratepayers during extreme weather events.
