New Forest Act presented to British Columbia ministers

The Boundary Forest Watershed Stewardship Society (BFWSS) has presented the New Forest Act to British Columbia ministers Ravi Parmar and Randene Neill. Developed in the Grand Forks and Boundary region, the framework was created through collaboration between scientists, Indigenous communities, retired foresters, and local residents.

The proposed act offers an alternative to the current government forestry system by prioritizing ecological balance over timber flow. It utilizes a ‘Protect-Restore-Harvest’ framework designed to safeguard primary forests, restore damaged landscapes, and restrict timber harvesting to areas where ecological limits allow. Under this model, harvesting would shift toward selection and partial-cutting systems to maintain functioning ecosystems, ensuring that land-based limits dictate forestry activity.
