New four-winged dinosaur species discovered in China
Paleontologists have discovered a new species of feathered dinosaur, Norellraptor barsboldi, in the Jiufotang Formation of northeastern China. The exceptionally well-preserved fossil, dating back to the Early Cretaceous period, measures approximately 57 centimeters in length and features four sets of feathered limbs and a long, plumaged tail.
The discovery provides significant insights into the evolution of flight. While the Microraptorinae group shares approximately 30% of its anatomical changes with birds, researchers suggest that flight-related characteristics may have evolved independently in different groups rather than being inherited from a single common ancestor. This finding challenges previous theories regarding the simultaneous development of flight capabilities in prehistoric birds and microraptorines.
