New giant marine isopod species named after Darth Vader

Researchers have identified a new species of giant marine isopod discovered off the coast of Quy Nhon, Vietnam. Named Bathynomus vaderi, the crustacean was named in reference to the Star Wars character Darth Vader due to its head shape resembling the villain's helmet.

According to a study published in the journal ZooKeys, the species is considered a supergiant of its family. The largest specimen analyzed measured approximately 32.5 centimeters and weighed over one kilogram. The species is distinguished from other supergiant isopods by the final segment of its rear legs, which narrows at the tip and curves slightly backward.

While most isopods measure less than 2.5 centimeters, members of the Bathynomus genus live at depths between 170 and 2,500 meters and feed on organic matter. Scientists noted that the species faces potential threats from human consumption; giant isopods are sold in Vietnamese seafood markets, a demand that has increased since 2017. Marine biology professor Lanna Cheng warned that such consumption could lead to the extinction of the species, especially given the slow reproduction rates of the genus.
