New Glioblastoma Therapies Using MicroRNA and EGFR Inhibitors Show Promise

Scientists at the University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center have developed an experimental approach that uses microRNA molecules delivered by brain‑penetrating nanoparticles, focused ultrasound and microbubbles to temporarily open the blood‑brain barrier. The method aims to suppress multiple genes driving glioblastoma growth and could overcome the limitations of existing drug‑based treatments. “This new approach could help target numerous molecules that promote cancer growth,” said lead researcher Roger Abounader.

Separately, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center reported that pretreating glioblastoma cells with the EGFR inhibitor afatinib before administering the chemotherapy drug temozolomide markedly reduces the tumor’s MGMT‑mediated resistance. The sequential treatment may enhance chemotherapy effectiveness and address the longstanding lack of progress in glioblastoma care. “Glioblastoma is a devastating brain cancer with a dismal prognosis and no truly effective treatments,” said Dr. Amyn Habib.
