New Hampshire officials to bill hikers after White Mountains rescue

Four 18-year-old hikers from New Jersey are facing potential bills for a rescue operation in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. The group, identified as Jainam Bhavsar, Purva Jayani, Tirth Shah, and Advik Yadav, attempted to hike Franconia Ridge on a Friday evening but were found to be ill-prepared for the conditions.

According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, the hikers lacked headlamps, sufficient food, and adequate water for the expected nine-hour trek. They also lacked proper clothing for the high-elevation environment. The group called for assistance after one member experienced breathing difficulties and leg pain.

Rescuers traveled over four miles to locate the group on Mount Lincoln in the early hours of Saturday morning. The hikers were provided with supplies and guided through the night to a trailhead. The department stated it intends to bill the individuals for the rescue costs due to their lack of preparation. Officials noted that the mission was funded by the NH Hike Safe Card and the Search & Rescue Fund rather than hunting or fishing license fees.
