New Hampshire ranks ninth for fastest-rising mortgage rates
A study by WalletHub reveals that New Hampshire ranks ninth in the United States for the fastest-rising residential mortgage rates. Between the first and second quarters of 2026, the state’s average mortgage interest rate increased by a full percentage point to 6.53%.
These rising borrowing costs exacerbate an existing housing affordability crisis in the state, which is already marked by tight inventory and high purchase prices. New Hampshire also ranks eighth among states for the most added mortgage debt and seventh for the largest increase in mortgage delinquency. Additionally, the state maintains the fourth-highest real estate property tax rate in the country at 1.66%.
While the median single-family home price remained relatively flat at $570,000 in September, it has increased compared to the previous year. Analysts expect 30-year fixed mortgage interest rates to remain in the mid-to-high 6% range through late 2026 and early 2027.
