New historical dramas arrive in cinemas

Two significant historical films are reaching wider audiences following successful festival runs.

Hungarian director Laszlo Nemes, winner of the Oscar for Best International Feature Film for 'Son of Saul', has released his new historical drama, 'Orphan'. The film, which premiered in the official competition at the Venice Film Festival, was filmed in Budapest and explores themes of identity and coming of age set in 1957. The story is partially inspired by the childhood memories of Nemes' father in post-war Hungary.

Additionally, the Spanish film 'Black Ball' has arrived in theaters. Following a highly acclaimed reception at the Cannes Film Festival, the production follows three interconnected timelines: 1932 during the Second Spanish Republic, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, and 2017. The narrative is linked by the unfinished work of poet Federico Garcia Lorca and explores themes of belonging and societal exclusion.
