New hospitals planned in Pesaro and Livorno spark controversy over site safety

The Marche region and the city of Pesaro are moving forward with a €200 million hospital project in the Muraglia district, an area classified as highly vulnerable to floods and landslides. Despite recent catastrophic floods in May 2023, regional and municipal officials have approved the site, arguing it shortens transfer times and re‑uses existing urban land. Critics say the technical committee lacked independent geologists and hydraulic engineers, and a citizen group has filed a complaint with the prosecutor, the Ministry of Health and the Court of Auditors, alleging political pressure from former mayor and current MEP Matteo Ricci.

In Tuscany, the Livorno municipality unveiled the definitive design for its new hospital on 15 May. Mayor Giani declared the project “irreversible” and pledged that the ceremonial first stone will be laid within two years, though final costs and construction timelines remain unspecified.
