Maltepe building collapse: New housing delivery begins for residents

Following the collapse of the Kardeşler Apartment in the Maltepe district of Istanbul on October 8, which resulted in five fatalities, the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has begun delivering new housing to the affected residents.

Thirty-four rights holders from the collapsed building and surrounding evacuated structures have been offered two options: moving into newly constructed, earthquake-resistant units at the Esenkent Neighborhood IETT Blocks, or opting for on-site urban transformation through TOKİ to rebuild their homes in their original locations.

Urban Transformation Vice President Hicran Çakmak stated that the priority is to mitigate the grievances of those affected and ensure safe living spaces. For those choosing the Esenkent units, the ministry is offering 3+1 type apartments with long-term payment plans featuring a 180-month maturity and debt updates based on the CPI divided by two. The key handover process for the first families is scheduled to commence on October 28.
