New Ilissos River bridge opens on Ethnarhou Makariou Avenue
A new road bridge on Ethnarhou Makariou Avenue, located over the Ilissos River, has officially opened to traffic. The project, situated between the municipalities of Kallithea and Moschato-Taavrou, restores two-way traffic with two lanes in each direction and lifts the previous road closure between Thiseos and Kapodistriou.
The completion follows a two-and-a-half-month delay caused by technical difficulties, including complex licensing requirements and issues involving public utility networks within the riverbed. The project is part of a larger €7.9 million initiative to manage the Ilissos River bed, funded by the Ministry of Interior through the National Development Program and managed by the Attica Region.
Beyond improving daily commutes, the infrastructure project aims to enhance flood protection for the wider area by increasing the river's drainage capacity. The broader works include interventions on three bridges, including the replacement of the old stone bridge and the construction of new pedestrian walkways.
