New initiatives launched to advance Alzheimer's and dementia prevention
New research and regulatory efforts are targeting the prevention of dementia and Alzheimer's disease through different approaches. In Australia, a study led by Monash University found that a nurse-led intervention program can improve dementia risk profiles in middle-aged adults. The 12-month program, which utilized the HAPPI MIND app, saw 56% of participants show improvement in risk scores compared to 44% in a standard care group. Improvements were driven by lifestyle changes, including increased physical activity, better body mass index, and higher fish intake.
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has established the Alzheimer’s Prevention Accelerator as part of its new Neuroscience Advancement and Innovation Nexus (NAIN). This initiative aims to support the National Alzheimer’s Project Act by addressing the scientific and clinical challenges of developing drugs that halt neurodegeneration before clinical symptoms appear. The accelerator will focus on innovative clinical trial designs, optimal trial populations, and the integration of biomarkers and digital health technologies to identify at-risk individuals earlier.
