New island forms in the Baltic Sea near Mikoszewo

A new sandy island has formed in the Gulf of Gdańsk, located just a few hundred meters from where the Mikoszewo spit was located two years ago. The formation has drawn significant attention from internet users due to its unique shape, which many have compared to an avocado, a seashell, or a leaf.

The island emerged near the mouth of the Vistula River, where dynamic conditions allow sand and silt carried by waves and the river to settle, creating sandbars and islets. This area is protected by a sandy spit that is part of the Mewia Łacha reserve. The new formation has already become a habitat for birds from the nearby reserve. Due to the shifting nature of the coastline in this region, the island may expand, connect to the mainland, or disappear depending on weather conditions and sediment levels.
