New Jersey and New York seek federal disaster aid after September storm
Governors in New Jersey and New York have formally requested federal major disaster declarations to assist recovery efforts following a severe nor’easter in late September.
In New Jersey, Governor Mikie Sherrill has petitioned the administration of President Donald Trump to release emergency funds for Monmouth, Atlantic, and Cape May counties. The request aims to cover operational costs for rescue efforts, debris removal, and repairs to essential public infrastructure damaged by heavy winds and coastal surges. The administration is also seeking to include these coastal regions in federal risk mitigation programs to strengthen future storm protections.
In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul has requested assistance for Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island. The request seeks to activate the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance Program to fund repairs for roads, bridges, schools, parks, and water treatment facilities. State officials and FEMA have validated that storm damage in these areas exceeds the threshold required for federal assistance.
