New Jersey beach badge policies face debate

Following the conclusion of the summer season, discussions have emerged regarding the potential elimination of beach badges along the New Jersey Shore. The debate centers on whether the state should move toward making beaches free for all visitors or, at a minimum, providing free year-round access for local residents.

While some states maintain beaches without tags, concerns remain regarding how municipalities would fund beach maintenance and cleaning without badge revenue. Potential alternatives, such as tax increases, present a significant political and economic challenge for local governments.
