New Jersey Devils aim to rebound with healthy defenseman Brett Pesce

Veteran defenseman Brett Pesce said the New Jersey Devils’ disappointing 2023‑24 season left a lasting impression and could serve as extra fuel for the team. The Devils missed the playoffs after a roster overhaul that included new general manager Sunny Mehta and signings such as Anthony Mantha, Evan Rodrigues, Nico Hischier and Arseny Gritsyuk. Pesce, who signed a six‑year contract in 2024, highlighted the increased depth and confidence within the locker room despite last year’s setbacks.

Pesce’s health is now seen as pivotal for the 2025‑26 campaign. After missing 45 games in 2024‑25 due to a reconstructed finger and an MCL sprain, he returned fully healthy and hopes to stabilize a young defensive corps alongside rookie Luke Hughes. Management expects his presence to improve the team’s penalty‑killing and possession metrics, key factors in the Devils’ push to return to the postseason.
