New Jersey Devils focus on roster depth and goaltending

The New Jersey Devils are undergoing significant roster and organizational changes under General Manager Sunny Mehta. Following a difficult 2026-27 season, the team has focused on restructuring its depth and goaltending strategy.

In net, Mehta has signaled a commitment to Nico Daws, signing him to a new contract with the expectation that he remains on the NHL roster. Daws, supported by Jake Allen and David Rittich, is being positioned to build on previous performances where he recorded a .899 save percentage. The organization is also looking toward the future with prospect Mikhail Yegorov, who is expected to debut by the 2028-29 season.

The Devils' offseason has also been marked by several trades, including moving Simon Nemec to the Calgary Flames in exchange for two first-round picks, a second-round pick, and defensive prospect Etienne Morin. While the team sought to make a major move for a top-line winger, those efforts did not materialize, leaving the team to address its top-six forward group through internal competition among players like Arseny Gritsyuk, Connor Brown, and Dawson Mercer.
