New Jersey Devils implement three-goalie rotation for training camp

The New Jersey Devils are entering training camp with an unconventional three-goalie rotation to determine their starting lineup for the upcoming season. Following the trade of Jacob Markstrom to the Florida Panthers on June 30, the team has moved toward a “crease-by-committee” approach to manage salary cap relief and performance concerns.

The competition features veteran Jake Allen, David Rittich, and 25-year-old Nico Daws. Daws recently signed a two-year contract worth $2.2 million. General Manager Sunny Mehta noted that the decision to move Markstrom was driven by the need for a clearer development path for players like Daws and to address Markstrom’s recent performance, which saw a career-low .883 save percentage.

The team will have four preseason games to evaluate the trio before the regular season begins. While some analysts view the strategy as a way to find a sudden successful solution, others warn of the risks involved if backup goaltenders are required unexpectedly.
