New Jersey Devils restructure goaltending depth and cap structure

The New Jersey Devils have restructured their goaltending depth following the trade of Jacob Markstrom to the Florida Panthers. By offloading Markstrom’s $6 million annual cap hit, General Manager Sunny Mehta has created financial flexibility, allowing the team to implement a platoon system featuring Nico Daws, David Rittich, and Jake Allen.

While the NHL strategy relies on managing the inherent volatility of the position, the organizational depth extends to the AHL. The Utica Comets currently face a shortage of reliable backup options behind sophomore Jakub Málek. To address this, there is interest in pursuing college free agent Philip Svedebäck, a former fourth-round pick who recently completed a successful tenure at Providence College with improving save percentages.
