New Jersey Devils unveil condensed 2026 preseason schedule amid trade speculation
The New Jersey Devils released their 2026 preseason itinerary, featuring four games against Metropolitan Division rivals. The slate opens on Sept. 20 with back‑to‑back contests at the Prudential Center, moves to Madison Square Garden on Sept. 24 for a Rangers matchup, and concludes at UBS Arena on Sept. 26. Rookies report to camp on Sept. 11, with two exhibition games versus the New York Islanders on Sept. 13 and 15, while veterans join on Sept. 16. The shortened schedule follows the league’s shift to an 84‑game regular season.
General manager Sunny Mehta, a former Florida Panthers executive, is evaluating roster upgrades. The Devils are linked to a trade for Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues, a 32‑year‑old depth player noted for strong defensive play, penalty‑kill proficiency and a $3.075 million cap hit for the final year of his contract. Analysts suggest the Devils could receive a 2026 third‑ or fourth‑round pick, while the Panthers look to free cap space after recent moves, including the acquisition of Brady Tkachuk.
