New Jersey e‑Bike Law Takes Effect with Licensing, Registration and Helmet Rules

Effective today, New Jersey’s new electric‑bike law requires riders to be at least 15 years old and to hold either a valid driver’s license or a dedicated e‑bike/moped license. All e‑bikes must be registered with the state Motor Vehicle Commission; low‑speed models (up to 20 mph) are exempt from insurance, while motorized bicycles capable of 21‑28 mph must carry insurance. Helmet use is mandatory for every rider. The law also bans motorized bicycles from interstate and high‑speed highways. Lakewood police chief Gregory Meyer said officers will focus on education and outreach before issuing fines, including during community events.

The Motor Vehicle Commission began issuing licenses and registration stickers on June 26, and riders are urged to verify their compliance before riding.
