New Jersey enables vehicle Transfer on Death beneficiaries
In New Jersey, vehicle owners can now designate a Transfer on Death beneficiary to allow next of kin to bypass the formal probate process. By completing a Transfer on Death Beneficiary Designation Form, owners can ensure the vehicle does not become part of the formal estate, eliminating the need for letters of administration during the transfer.
To claim a vehicle under this designation, a beneficiary must present the completed designation form, the current vehicle title, a certified copy of the owner’s death certificate, a universal title application, valid identification, and proof that any existing liens have been settled.
Additionally, New Jersey maintains a Next-of-Kin Registry. This web-based system allows individuals aged 14 and older to voluntarily provide emergency contact information. This data is used exclusively by law enforcement to locate contacts if a driver is involved in a crash and is unable to communicate. The registry was established following the passage of ‘Sara’s Law’.
