New Jersey extends utility disconnection protections through August
The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has extended protections against utility service disconnections for eligible residents through August 31. Under the Summer Termination Program (STP), electricity, water, and sewer companies are prohibited from cutting off services to qualifying customers during the peak heat months of the summer.
The program operates from June 15 to August 31 and is modeled after the Winter Termination Program (WTP), which runs from November 15 to March 15. In a previous cycle, approximately 283,738 customers were protected under these initiatives. The NJBPU advises residents who fear service disconnection to contact their utility providers to verify eligibility and establish deferred payment plans.
