New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill says software error added 6,600 noncitizens to voter rolls

Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey disclosed that a software error in the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission between June 2023 and June 2024 mistakenly registered roughly 6,600 people who had identified themselves as non‑citizens to the voter rolls. Fewer than 400 of those individuals are known to have cast ballots, accounting for less than 0.01 % of total votes cast.

The governor ordered the removal of the erroneous registrations, initiated an independent investigation, and announced that the vendor responsible for the system, IDEMIA, will be replaced. The U.S. Department of Justice has opened an investigation into the incident, and the White House and Republican lawmakers are using the case to urge passage of the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship for federal elections. IDEMIA disputes the “glitch” characterization, saying the state was responsible for voter‑eligibility verification.

The episode has intensified the national debate over voter‑ID laws, election‑security reforms, and the accuracy of voter‑registration databases.
