New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill Leverages World Cup Final for State Benefits

Governor Mikie Sherrill attended seven World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, including the final, and built a close relationship with former U.S. goalkeeper Tony Meola. She highlighted fan zones, a viral “Viking Row” celebration with Norwegian supporters, and urged that the event should bring tangible economic gains to the state.

Sherrill criticized FIFA for contributing nothing despite the tournament generating about $11 billion in profit, saying, “There’s a lot of controversy over whether or not this makes sense. We’ll be doing all the math as these returns come in.” She also noted her battles with President Donald Trump, who will be present at the final, and stressed that New Jersey residents should feel part of the global spectacle.
